Sewing is Beneficial to Your Health

Relaxation is right at your finger tips! For those of you who are already familiar with activities such as sewing, quilting, or knitting, it is easy to understand how a person can end up spending hours at a time working on one project. But did you know that sewing  can actually be beneficial to your health?

According to an article written by Jacque Wilson on CNN.com, “Crafting can help those who suffer from anxiety, depression or chronic pain. It may also ease stress, increase happiness and protect the brain from damage caused by aging.”

When your brain becomes completely absorbed in a simple repetitive activity like sewing, it reaches a state similar to that of meditation. Sewing can be practiced almost anywhere and for as long as you have time for. According to The American Institute of Stress, “…the repetitive actions needed for knitting and crochet can induce a “relaxation response” much like that experienced with meditation, Tai Chi, yoga and other relaxation techniques.”

Simple hobbies like sewing, knitting, or needle point are important for several reasons. First, it allows us to unwind and simply relax without having to focus on all the things on our to-do Sewing7list that have been piling up. Second, sewing can help your creativity grow! Third, you can do these activities with your family and friends. And finally, once you have completed a project, it is nice to have something beautiful to show for your hard work.

So next time you are sewing for fun and find that a few hours have passed by, just remember – you are helping out your body and mind!
